My Current Mantra

For those that are focusing on weight loss in their journey to conceive, I thought I'd share my little mantra that I use when dealing with food cravings.

I hope it helps.

Last year for Lent I started doing daily vlogs. They were random in topic and style and people seemed to really like it. I find myself a little scattered right now and I'm in the middle of trying to conceive so daily random vlogs just aren't in the cards this year.

HOWEVER - before you freak out,

there IS something I'm doing that might be worth a daily BLOG.

Christina - SubfertileFrugalista on YouTube - has encouraged me to go on a PCOS friendly diet during this injectable cycle, and frankly I'm so desperate to get my body to respond to the fertility medicine that I've finally accepted her challenge.

The Rules

1. Avoid all simple sugars such as candy, sodas, cakes, pies, ice cream, etc.

{These are almost pure forms of glucose.}

2. Avoid vegetables that are grown underground - like carrots

3. Avoid corn, bananas, and foods enriched with maltodextrins or corn syrup.

4. Avoid wheat, rice, rye, barley, and oats.

5. Eat a minimum of 3 servings each of above-ground vegetables and fruits daily.

6. Eat at least 6 ounces of protein every day.

7. Cheese and Legumes are fine to eat.

8. Don’t count calories - Just eat regularly.

I've been slowly trying to get used to eating this way over the past week so that it's not a shock to my system. First impression - I think it's doable.

Last night was my last blatant cheat for a while - Pizza Night - and even that wasn't so bad.
I had a huge salad first: Great selection of greens, chopped walnuts, dried cranberries, crumbled feta cheese, and I went really easy on the dressing. Only after I finished my salad did I eat ONE slice of pizza. But I could have easily substituted the pizza for a chicken breast and been equally as satisfied with the meal.

I'm going to post my daily food log and discuss where I went wrong, accidental cheats, and any moments of clarity I run into along the way.

While weight loss would be a great side effect of this diet, I really just want to stabilize my insulin levels by avoiding carbs. Either way I'll weigh in on Monday mornings and post any change along with Sunday's food log.

Feel free to post any questions you may have about the diet, and I'll try to answer them as quickly as possible.

Let me know if YOU'RE considering starting the diet and especially if you're posting menu ideas. The more inspiration the better.

Do you ever feel judged by your birth choices?
Sometimes they're not choices at all.
Most of the time what happens during labor and delivery cannot be controlled- you respond to your body and hope everything goes well.
The last thing the woman then needs is to be made to feel guilty that the birth of her child didn't meet your expectations.

Financial Breakdown of an Injectable Cycle with IUI

Since it looks like this Femara cycle was a bust, we were faced with a choice -

try Femara again, or switch to injectables.

I wanted to give my ovaries one last chance (and give us a month to prepare ourselves for the cost of an injectable cycle),

so we decided to try Femara again and then pursue injectables for cycle 3

if we are not successful with cycle 1 or 2.

I stopped by the financial counselor on my way out of the fertility clinic and

got the cost breakdown of ONE cycle on injectables.

Hold on to your chins ladies, because they're about to hit the floor.

Physician Fees:

Endocrine Management (wtf is that!?) - $885

Follicle Scans (4 at $301 a piece) - $1204

Blood Draws (4 at $13 a piece) - $52

Insemination Fees - $233

Subtotal: $2374

{oh we're not even close to being done.}

Laboratory Fees:

Estradiol Hormone Level Test (4 at $77 a piece) - $308

Sperm wash for Partner's sperm - $180

or Donor Sperm Vial - $520

-----------------------------------

Subtotal:

$488 with partner's sperm

$828 with donor sperm

Total fee for 1 Gonadotropin Injectable Cycle:

With partner's sperm: $2,862

With donor sperm: $3,202

I'll give you a moment to comprehend spending that much

before I point out that price does not include the cost of medication,

with is estimated at between $1,500 and $3,000 a cycle.

So our total cost for 1 cycle would be between $4362 and $5862.

But have no fear, they include 1 free pregnancy test...

It better be a digital test.

and it better be made of gold.

and I hope it performs a choreographed

happy dance when you get a bfp.

Thanks goodness that we have insurance that will cover a good portion of the cost,

and fingers crossed that the Femara works and

we're able to spend that money on cute baby stuff instead.
